Laptops to Suit Everyone
Nowadays, there is a vast array of laptops to suit every whim and purpose. There are laptops that are ideal for the budget-conscious; there are options suited for travel; there are models that are handy for fun and recreation; and there are laptops loaded with power and best suited for business or work.
Laptops that are budget-friendly, yet come with a range of easy-to-use programs for typing documents/letters, creating and organizing music or video presentations, are now widely available. For the market of uninitiated PC users, low-cost mini notebooks, bearing top brand names, can be as beefy as budget laptops come. For about $800, a branded budget laptop’s specifications may include a ‘dual core’ processor complemented by a hefty 2GB of RAM. Laptops priced at this level may also include a 120GB hard drive and 14-inch WXGA (Wide eXtended Graphics Array) screen, thereby bolstering the price-to-performance ratio. For laptops priced lower than $800, consumers may get newly released versions, running Windows XP Home Edition with an 80GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM.
There are 9-inch laptops currently offered at $549 for the Linux version, and Linux-based mini notebooks for slightly less. PC vendors will also be dazzling consumers with a wider range of colors, most likely to attract school kids and the burgeoning young tech-savvy generation.
Price, the overall look, and design details are marketed to be the most distinguishing factors as new laptops roll out in the marketplace.
As for laptops suited for travel and leisure, there are skinny versions now weighing just a little over a kilo, small enough to fit and carry in a body bag. For about $3000, a proud laptop owner may carry with him a handy travel companion with a 100GB hard drive and DVD writer, complete with hidden speakers capable of blasting sharp-sounding audios. Higher-priced laptops may offer a home entertainment hub and allow graphics-intensive games to be played. For slightly over $2000, you can get a robust hardware packed with features including a card reader, a DVD burner, webcam and slots. In addition, battery life can be rock-solid, even while watching videos. Laptops that are best for travel may be those with finger-friendly keyboard, enough RAM, and a fast DVD rewriter, for burning discs on the go. Some lightweight notebooks, though, may not be suited for people who type lots of documents and email. Laptops weighing 1 kg with RAM of 1GB may suffice for web surfing and emails, but will not handle tasks beyond that. Moreover, the battery will last for only a few hours.
Power-packed laptops, on the other hand, are packed with specifications and an abundance of extras, such as a fingerprint reader. Duo processors, 1Gb RAM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, plus a built-in SIM slot for a 3G data card that allows web surfing at high speed using 3G phone network, are just some of the common features of laptops built for power.
